Cloud Microphone’s JRS-34 series is made up of three ribbon models in a variety of active and passive configurations
Cloud Microphone’s JRS-34 series is made up of three ribbon models in a variety of active and passive configurations with a choice of various finishes, including a black, non-reflective powder coat finish for on-camera use. Accented with a silver logo, the phantom-powered, active circuit microphone is joined by the passive JRS-34-P, which is grey with nickel screens and a silver logo. The JRS-34-SPE is a special edition chrome model, which comes with either active or passive circuitry. The new ribbon models were given the model prefix JRS in homage to the late Jon R. Sank, who was the father of the designer Stephen Sank. Known for his work with RCA that produced legendary microphones such as the BK-11 and BK-10A, Mr Sank senior succeeded RCA’s Harry Olson as the guiding force behind the company’s continuing development of ribbon microphones. Each JRS-34 ribbon is cut, corrugated and installed by hand although the design also incorporates audio transformers by CineMag Inc., neodymium magnets and active JFET circuitry.
The Tucson-based manufacturer has also developed the two-channel Cloudlifter for interfacing passive, low-output ribbon microphones with any phantom-powered input device. Offering two channels of portable, initial pre-amplification for any passive signal, the Cloudlifter simplifies the task of using ribbon microphones in any application. Capable of increasing a ribbon microphone over 20dB, the Cloudlifter is equipped with direct-coupled JFET (Junction Field-Effect Transistor) circuitry. Offering clean gain, the technology keeps the audio path free-and-clear of transformers, capacitors and resistors.
