KVM over IP switches promise ‘fastest virtual media transmission’ in class

The fourth generation of KVM over IP switches from Aten are billed by the manufacturer as delivering ‘twice as fast virtual media transmission speed, advanced FPGA graphics processing and high-grade security’ when compared to their predecessors. Forming the KN8 Series, the switches are intended as a ‘next generation’ solution for challenges such as gaining remote server room access.

The switches within the KN8 Series boast a reportedly more powerful FPGA graphics processor than previous models, facilitating HD video output. Local and remote consoles can display a server’s UI at 1920 x 1200 HD resolution, meaning the KN8 Series is suitable for use within broadcast and postproduction applications.

Also new from Aten are the manufacturer’s first HDMI HDBaseT-Lite Matrix switches, the VM3404H and VM3909H, described as combining ‘HDBaseT technology with mirrored HDMI outputs’.

Intended for use in digital signage and video wall applications, the VM3404H and VM3909H both extend uncompressed video, audio, power and control signals via HDBaseT over a single LAN cable up to 70m. They also support video wall, Seamless Switch and Power over HDBaseT (POH) when used in combination with a selected Aten receiver – using the switches with the VE805R enables video wall and Seamless Switch, while the VE802R provides PoH and 4K functionality, and the VE601R offers HDMI to DVI conversion.

The VM3404H and VM3909H feature four to nine HDMI inputs and four to nine mirrored HDMI/HDBaseT outputs, respectively. When a mirrored HDMI output is connected to a display, it can be used to verify the corresponding HDBaseT output or as an additional video display. Control is via front-panel buttons, IR channel ports, RS-232 and Ethernet (Telnet / Web GUI). Bi-directional IR channel ports also support control of A/V sources locally at the switch or remotely at the display.
