Lawo launches Sapphire radio console

Lawo has launched the newest member of its radio console family, the Sapphire.

In terms of its design, the Sapphire is based on the Crystal console. It has up to 40 faders which can either be placed arbitrarily on individual studio islands or integrated into the desk, allowing moderators to work from different positions while the studio is on-air. Using layers, up to 80 mono sources can be connected simultaneously. In addition to mono, stereo and 5.1 sources are possible as well, each of which can be assigned to a single fader.

Different modules with longer channel strips can be chosen. They feature OLED displays, rotary controls, and buttons. An optional Overbridge can be added to allow displaying channels directly via the channel strips.

The heart of the Sapphire is based on the Dallis system. Users can tailor the console’s functionality to their personal preferences with tools such as an integrated router, signal processing with dynamics units, EQ, silence detects, or the integrated talkback function. There is also access to a variety of interfaces that cover all standard formats and is constantly updated. It will also feature a Ravenna Audio-over-IP interface in the near future.

Lawo has also released a new DSP module for surround channels – Ambit Upmix. This converts stereo signals into surround signals, thus providing an upmix facility completely integral to the mixing console and is fully downmic compatible. The AMBIT facility is included in the mc² 4.12 software release.

The Lawo iPhone Remote app enables remote control of an mc² series console and the Nova73 HD router. The app follows the mixing console’s layout, and a ‘swipe’ will navigate users from left to right of the control surface. Special user buttons that appear only on the iPhone app can be assigned from the mxGUI using the same CustomFunction that is used for the console’s user buttons. This makes it possible for the iPhone to act, for example, as a monitor panel for the director, or as a remote control for a GPI.
