Mo-Fi headphones promise ‘audiophile quality everywhere’

A new series of studio headphones from Blue Microphones aims to bring an Audiophile quality listening experience to any environment, regardless of device type, by integrating an amplifier directly into the earcups. According to Blue Microphones’ CEO, John Maier, the move is akin to the transition from passive to active studio monitors. A transition in which ‘everyone benefitted’.
Named Mo-Fi, the powered headphones therefore feature a built-in high-powered 240mV amplifier matched to 50mm drivers that purportedly produce ‘incredible detail, accuracy and articulation when provided with ample power’. The amp has three settings: On, On+ and Off. The On and Off settings are as they would appear (in off mode the headphones are passive), but when switched to On+ mode the amp’s low frequency enhancement circuit is activated.
According to the manufacturer, the headband and earcups have been completely reengineered, departing from the traditional ‘spring-like’ design. The Mo-Fi features a multi-jointed band designed to cater to a variety of head shaped and sizes, while the earcups stay parallel to the ear at all times helping to improve isolation and reduce sound bleed. There is also an integrated headband adjustment knob that allows users to customise the pressure and tightness of the cups.
A built-in rechargeable battery is stated to provide 12-14 hours of play time and can be charged via a micro USB port on the one of the earcups. If the battery runs out, the unit switches to passive mode and continues to function.
