myMicSound app offers mic advice

A new web-based application named myMicSound is using audio analysis technology more typically employed in song-recognition apps to help end-users determine the best microphone for their needs.

Developed by US-based company Ear Machine, the application is intended to help ‘simplify the difficult task of using your ears to decide which microphone to purchase’. To do so it employs similar analysis techniques to those employed in popular online music recommendation software. Andrew Sabin, Ear Machine owner and psychoacoustics researcher, has described myMicSound as ‘the first step toward a fundamental change in how people decide to purchase audio equipment’

Users can reportedly either submit their own recording for analysis or use an existing clip from within the application’s library. The software then removes the sound of the microphone used to make that recording, and simulates the sound of new microphones instead. Factors such as proximity to the sound source, the polar pattern, and whether filters are active, are taken into account. The software’s algorithm ultimately learns the user’s preference by analysing ratings of example microphones. A list of potential models is then offered to the user.

‘Currently, people make these decisions by recommendation or clumsily-organised listening comparisons,’ added Mr Sabin. ‘myMicSound offers users a simple format to use their own ears to conduct a free, controlled, and comprehensive listening test.’
