New matrix mixer leads the way for A-T

Audio-Technica has launched the DMM828 microprocessor-controlled, programmable, automatic-switching eight-channel digital matrix mixer. Designed for a variety of applications, the AT-DMM828 reportedly improves audio quality by keeping the number of open microphones to a minimum.

The mixer features correlation, which analyses and interprets redundancy of source material between channels in real time to favour the dominant channel, simplifying the layout/output and reducing feedback. It can be used with low-impedance dynamic or condenser microphones including wireless microphones and line-level sources. Each of the eight balanced inputs provides switchable 48V phantom power, for which attenuation is also selectable on each input to allow use with line-level signals.

Up to 16 AT-DMM828s can be daisy-chained via CAT5e cable providing a total of 128 channels of inputs, carrying control bus, audio and configuration data between mixers. Multiple mixers linked in this way will operate as if they are a single mixer, so that microphones activated on any mixer will cause the appropriate switching functions to occur.

Each matrix mixer includes individual channel contact closures (via DB25 connector) and PC control (via RS-232 connector or USB). The RS-232 connector can also be used to connect an external third-party control system, such as Crestron or AMX, using open disclosure communication protocol to control the mixer.

Also new from the manufacturer is the ATM610a/S hypercardioid dynamic handheld microphone. This is a variation on the ATM610a, featuring a lockable MagnaLock on/off switch design for silent on/off operation.

Like the ATM610a, the ATM610a/S features a hypercardioid polar pattern that reduces the pickup of sounds from the sides and rear, improving isolation of the desired sound source. The ATM610a is aimed at vocal applications and comes with internal shock mounting, a multi-stage grille design and a Quiet-Flex stand clamp and corrosion-resistant contacts from the gold-plated XLRM-type connector.
