Nugen goes from up to down

Engineers have been able to upmix stereo and 5.1 surround mixes to 9.1 for a while now using Nugen Audio’s Halo Upmix plug-in. The new Halo Downmix tool reverses this functionality for ‘precise’ downmixing of feature-film or 5.1 mixes to stereo. The tool is stated to bypass some of the common problems with downsampling tools, such as excess ambient sounds as the rear channels collapse to stereo, or disproportionate levels of low frequency energy. Halo downmix is stated to overcome these problems by providing control over the relative levels, timing and direct/ambient sound balance.

In other news, the company has introduced ISL DSP for Avid Venue S6L console, giving S6L owners access to Nugen’s true-peak limiting technology. According to the manufacturer, this update for ISL DSP introduces full support for Avid Venue S6L live systems in addition to the existing support for Avid HDX and native formats. ISL DSP requires the installation of either ISL 2 or ISL 2st.

The ISL 2 tool provides broadcast-quality limiting for surround true-peak limiting up to 7.1, in compliance with the ITU-R B.1770 standard. ISL 2st provides true-peak limiting for stereo mixes.
