Powersoft looks to the future

A string of announcements from Powersoft points to new collaborations and interesting new technology from the Italian manufacturer.
First is M-Force, a linear motor characterised by a moving magnet and genuine push-pull behaviour. Designed specifically for loudspeaker manufacturers and powered by Powersoft proprietary Switch-Mode amplification, M-Force has been unveiled following a development cycle of more than four years.
‘With M-Force we have created an alternative method of acoustic transduction, by combining the latest technologies in the domains of power amplification, magnetic materials and advanced real-time digital signal processing,’ explained Powersoft’s R&D Director Claudio Lastrucci. ‘The result is a device that considerably improves the electrical to acoustic conversion efficiency at a system level, allowing the true exploitation of the native qualities of switch mode amplification.’
With respect to conventional transducers, M-Force requires less power from the amplifier to produce higher sound pressure levels. It is a genuine push-pull engine where the magnetic field interacts in a linear fashion to provide a controlled force to the moving elements. The transducer is completely free of moving electrical conductors which reportedly maximises the efficiency and reliability of the whole system. The high motor strength, typically one order of magnitude above conventional technologies, reportedly yields to a ‘natural, controlled sound and negligible power compression at the highest sound levels’. The extreme displacement capabilities allow an increase in SPL in function of the size ratio of the cabinet design.
In terms of collaboration, Powersoft has made two announcements about incorporating technology from other manufacturers into its products. First, it has entered into a licensing agreement with Audinate to incorporate Dante media networking into its amplifier products.
‘Our plan is to build new products for the newest generation of our Install and Touring rack amplifiers,’ said Luca Giorgi, pro audio BU manager for Powersoft. ‘Powersoft’s first compatible products integrating Dante will be the new Ottocanali series. We rely on the new developments planned by Audinate for integrating an AVB stack to have a Dante/AVB solution in the medium term. We are also looking at Audinate’s Ultimo Dante chip as an answer for our OEM Power modules’ which are sold through partners.’
The second announcement of this type has seen Powersoft integrate AFMG’s FIRmaker technology with its amps. AFMG FIRmaker allows fast and precise generation of system FIR filters tailored to a venue. These can now be loaded directly into Powersoft’s flagship product lines, the K Series of amplifiers and the DSP4 module for powered loudspeakers.
