Pro Tools|HD Native goes mobile with Thunderbolt interface

In what is likely to be greeted as particularly good news for laptop users, Avid has answered the growing demand for a Pro Tools|HD Native audio interface using Thunderbolt, the Intel-owned interface technology which was jointly developed by Apple and first implemented on the 2011 MacBook Pro.

The Pro Tools|HD Native Thunderbolt Interface delivers, says Avid, ‘the lowest latency and the highest sound quality of any host based audio workstation for Thunderbolt technology equipped CPUs’.

However, its arrival does not mark the end of the manufacturer’s support for PCIe cards, with end-users able to choose between the two for the foreseeable future.

The interface also includes a built-in ‘audiophile-grade’ headphone output which is reportedly powerful enough to drive headphones with high impedance loads. As an extra incentive, the manufacturer is also offering a scheme whereby end-users can trade-in a Digi 002, Digi 003 or Mbox Pro to earn discounts on upgrading to a new HD Native system.
