Radial Engineering adds three modules

Three additions have been made to the Radial Engineering catalogue in the shape of the Voco-Loco, the Tossover and the Cherry Picker, which is described as ‘a unique device that enables the studio engineer to connect a microphone and select between four mic preamps in order to optimise the signal path’.

The Cherry Picker is a ‘straight wire’ passive switcher that features a balanced mic input with four outputs. Front panel ‘radio-style’ selector switches enable the engineer to select the active preamp while the unit automatically shuts off the others. Features include military-grade gold contact sealed relays to avoid distortion, 48V phantom power and a front panel mute switch. Each output is also equipped with a ground lift switch.

Meanwhile the Tossover enables users to divide the frequency bands of an audio signal to separately process lows and highs or combine the two in series to create a band-pass filter.

The front panel of the module boasts two sets of controls for focusing on the mid and high frequencies and the mid and bass frequencies respectively, while a frequency knob allows cut-off point adjustment and an amplitude knob adjusts the signal level. Each frequency divider is also equipped with a three position filter that may be set with a 12dB, 18dB or 24dB per octave slope. The Tossover can be used with any 500 series rack via its XLR I/O, but its functionality is enhanced when used in tandem with a Radial Workhorse, as both bands can be processed simultaneously.

Finally, the Voco-Loco is a combination mic preamp and effects loop insert enabling vocalists to add guitar effects such as delay, reverb or distortion to the voice via a footswitch.

The preamp reportedly delivers more than 60dB of gain, while the module also offers 48V phantom power for condenser mics. Also onboard is a two band shelving EQ and Radial’s Accustate level control, which automatically sets the gain and sensitivity via a dual wafer potentiometer for improved signal-to-noise.
