RME interfaces with Madi

RME has announced the introduction of the MADIface Pro, a variant of its popular Babyface Pro audio interface, replacing an 8-channel ADAT I/O with Madi connectivity. The manufacturer, which is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary, has also unveiled three other products in the form of the Fireface UFX+, ADI-2 Pro, and ARC USB, as well as firmware updates for its TotalMix FX.
The MADIface Pro is described as offering the benefits of high channel count digital transmission, as a single cable on an interface can reportedly cater for 64 channels of audio. It is designed as a mobile solution for remote, live broadcast, as well as providing a solution for Windows and Mac within a studio.
RME has also released its first interface with Thunderbolt connectivity, the Fireface UFX+, which can handle up to 94 I/O channels and also includes USB 3 connectivity. It includes DURec (Direct USB Recording), giving it the flexibility to include Madi I/O, allowing for up to 188 I/O channels, an increase of 128 more channels than can be handled by the device’s predecessor, the Fireface UFX.
The ADI-2 Pro is an AD/DA converter, combining a USB DAC (AES, SPDIF and ADAT), functionality for intelligent switching between user modes and a headphone amp that includes two individually controlled outputs. Designed for use with both mastering and measuring systems, the ADI-2 Pro can reportedly be used in the field alongside an iPad, without the need of a power outlet due to an optional power bank that affords up to five hours of mobile use.
Meanwhile, the ARC USB (Advanced Remote Control) allows for easy operation of the Fireface UFX+ and RME’s TotalMix FX software. With the option to connect it to a Mac or PC, or directly into the Fireface UFX+, the ARC USB offers intuitive control over the DSP-based routing and effects section of TotalMix FX, and can simultaneously control multiple units.
Finally, TotalMix FX has itself received an update, with changes made to its reverb and echo functions. The monitoring solution’s drivers, firmware and iPad app have been revised to include eight reverb types, improved tonal character for existing reverbs and higher density and advanced fade out. The software’s echo effect has acquired an adjustable high cut and supports for operation via BPM values.
RME has stated that interfaces with a dedicated DSP will require a firmware update to support the improved effects. Several improvements have reportedly also been made to the class compliant mode and normal operation.
The MADIface series driver has also been updated to support an ASIO buffer size as small as 32 samples, while HDSPe series driver’s WDM device configuration has been implemented.
