RME updates Babyface
Published: PRODUCTS
RME has released a firmware update for its Babyface mobile interface, adding a standalone mode and class compliant USB operation.
The Babyface now operates in three different modes: driver-based USB 2.0 (as before), standalone mode, and class compliant USB Audio 2.0 (CC) mode. The latter describes a standard that is natively supported by operating systems like Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Although the functionality in this mode is limited, it is useful if the user either cannot or does not want to install the original driver files which unlock additional features like TotalMix, effects, and slightly lower latencies.
The manufacturer believes the true benefits of the CC mode are seen when the unit is connected to an Apple iPad or iPad Mini. This makes all of its connections, including microphone preamps, balanced line level outputs, the hi-power headphone output, the SPDIF and eight-channel ADAT digital interface and the Midi connections available to audio apps.
In standalone mode, the Babyface is not connected via USB at all. It acts both as an A/D converter, and as a D/A converter, and as master or slave to digital appliances at sampling rates of up to 192kHz.
Both in CC and standalone mode, the user has access to input and output gain, phantom power and additional settings with the control elements of the unit.
