Sommer Cable release Octopus Hybrid line

German manufacturer Sommer Cable has released a new line of Octopus Hybrid cables. The line includes the Octopus Hybrid PUR 443, the Octopus Hybrid PUR 244 and the Octopus Hybrid 443 premade system.

The new Octopus Hybrid PUR 443 fibre-optical hybrid cable consists of four OM3 multimode fibre optics, three power supply wires, plus two signal pairs for control applications or for transmitting AES/EBU (or DMX) signals. The whole construction is surrounded by an aramid mesh and fitted with a PUR jacket. There are extra aramid yarns in the central elements which aid strain relief. The maximum tensile load of the cable is 600N. It has an outer diameter of 13.4mm and weighs 190g/m. Therefore, the manufacturer is able to offer 100m cable length systems on the HT481 drum from Schill at a total weight of less than 30kg.

Sommer Cable is also offering the Octopus Hybrid 443 cable as fully premade systems. Here the Straubenhardt-based manufacturer relies on the modular HAN-ECO connector from Harting. The smallest possible connector housing with three module slots takes the fibre-optic module, one Power/AF module plus the PE module in a housing that is 80mm wide. All connections are established via a single plug-in procedure and the cable end is reportedly equipped with efficient strain relief. The cable ends can also be configured to individual customer requests. For example, they can be spliced up to LC, SC or ST and to a multi-fibre connector.

The Octopus Hybrid PUR 244 is based on the SMPTE 311M standard that is widely used in the broadcast sector. Weighing in at 133g/m and optimised for the SMPTE 311 connector, the construction houses two singlemode fibre optics, two power supply pairs, each with AWG20, and two signal pairs. With a central aramid element and an overall aramid mesh, the reworked cable design achieves a maximum tensile load of 600N.
