SoundField upgrades UPM-1 software

SoundField has released a version 2 software upgrade for its UPM-1 stereo-to-5.1 upmix processor. Key improvements with the program include 5.1 channel separation and lower-latency processing.

Processing latency in the original version was set to one video frame, but SoundField has included a new low-latency mode in v2 which reportedly upmixes in just 9ms. All new UPM-1s will be shipped set to this low-latency mode and will be pre-installed with the new software, although the latency can still be set either to 40ms or 33ms if required.

A further improvement takes the form of enhanced channel separation functionality for 5.1 mixes. The manufacturer claims v2 provides ‘tighter’ mixes with more defined localisation in each channel and less crosstalk between the stems of the mix.

A further new feature in version 2 is that 5.1 mixes will have the commentary almost exclusively in the centre channel. This allows more direct sounds in the original stereo to be mixed realistically across the front three channels with the more reverberant components found in the rear surrounds. This new feature has been designed with high-definition broadcast applications in mind as these follow the same methodology.

The new v2 software upgrade is available free to existing UPM-1 owners.
