SuperSharpy cuts through the crowd

Clay Paky’s SuperSharpy is the first in the manufacturer’s new Prima Series luminaries, promising four times more brightness than its predecessor, the Sharpy, at a little more than double the power consumption.

An ACL beam-type moving head, the SuperSharpy features a 470W, 7,000K lamp using a new optical unit with a large 170mm diameter lens, from which a searchlight type beam emerges. The beam diameter can be modified with a size reduction system, scaling down to a ‘surgical micro-beam’. The brightness is stated to remain the same at any beam angle and the minimum aperture is 0-degrees, meaning the beam remains parallel for its entire length. A frost unit also allows users to soften the beam edge to such an extent that the moving head can reportedly almost be used as a wash light.

In terms of new effects, the light comprises a CMY mixing system based on three eight-colour wheels. Dichroic filters have been combined to produce a wide variety of hues and shades. CTO filters are available on each wheel to create warmer shades. A special fourth wheel with saturated colours can rotate continuously at variable speeds producing a mid-air ‘rainbow’ effect. The unit also features two gobo wheels, one with seven rotating dichroic gobos, and one with 20 fixed metal gobos.

The manufacturer has also released details of Stormy, reportedly a blend of LED technology and a classic strobe. The fixture’s light source is a strip of powerful LEDs with a 5,700K colour temperature. Due to their linear arrangement, the LEDs are able to emulate a bright Xenon linear lamp. A built-in flash effect is enhanced with a parabolic reflector, like a classic strobe. However, Stormy does not project the light directly forwards like other LED strobes; instead the reflector collects the main beam over an aperture of 42-degrees, leaving 130-degrees for spatial diffusion. Its total brightness is reportedly 80,000 lumens.

The use of LEDs means that the frequency, duration and intensity of the flash pulse can be digitally controlled. Besides the white LED version, Stormy also comes with RGBW LEDs, eliminating the need for gels. The RGBW version produces a total brightness of 40,000 lumens. The unit promises an expected lifespan of over 50,000 hours.
