Tascam launches X-48MKII

Tascam has unveiled a range of new products and applications covering recording and audio interfaces. Heading the list is the new version of the manufacturer’s X-48.

The Japanese company has developed a new and improved version of its X-48, which was originally the first standalone 48-track hybrid hard disk workstation and co-developed with SaneWave. The X-48MKII integrates a purpose-built hard disk recorder with the GUI, editing, and mixing features of a computer-based digital audio workstation. MKII comes with a built-in, automated 48-channel digital mixer and editing functions, which can be plugged into a VGA monitor, mouse and keyboard for editing, track naming and monitor mixing.

The new unit includes a dual-core Intel Atom processor, a 1TB internal hard drive, eSATA and USB interfaces, 48-hour continuous recording at 44.1kHz or 20-hour continuous recording at 96kHz and HDTV tri-level sync.

Another new release from Tascam is the US-125M USB audio interface with mixer functionality. This can combine a mic, instrument and line source with a computer audio signal.

The new interface provides up to 16 bit/48kHz audio resolution and features four inputs with dedicated level controls: a microphone input (balanced XLR/TRS on the rear or unbalanced mini jack on the front) with switchable limiter and signal/overload indicator, a guitar input (standard phone jack), a stereo line input (RCA) and a stereo audio input from computer via USB.

The USB-powered device is housed in a solid aluminium case and can also be used as a simple stand-alone mixer.

Finally, the Tascam PCM Recorder Application is a free download for the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. The app has been designed for use with the manufacturer’s other iOS products such as the iM2 stereo microphone and iXZ mic and guitar interface, turning the Apple devices into a stereo recorder, based on the DR-series.

The new app has input and output level faders with an on-screen meter which checks levels, integrated high and low EQ, stereo limiting and a low cut filter to prevent overload also come as standard.

In the application, CD-quality mono or stereo files can reportedly be recorded for up to 12 hours. After recording, files can be accessed through iTunes or uploaded to SoundCloud from the iPhone.
