Vioso RX decoding shifts to GPU

Moving away from the traditional approach of performing video decoding on the CPU, AV Stumpfl has added a new video decoding algorithm to the Wings Vioso RX software that uses specialised GPU rather CPU instructions. The benefits of shifting to GPU decoding reportedly include substantially higher bandwidth and therefore high image quality, more concurrent video layers and higher video resolutions on the same physical hardware platform.

Previously, compressed video data decoded on the CPU has been transferred via the PCI bus to the GPU for playout. With the latest software, data is still transferred compressed over the PCI bus, but then unpacked and decoded directly on the GPU.

According to the company, the new compression technology is a ‘good solution to fill the gap between uncompressed and regular video compression algorithms’.
