AES announces new standards manager

WORLD: Former president of the AES (Audio Engineering Society) Dr Richard Cabot has been appointed as the organisation’s new standards manager. Dr Cabot replaces Mark Yonge, who has served in the role since 2001 and recently announced his plans to retire following the 2017 AES International Convention in Berlin.

Dr Cabot’s previous experience with AES and its standards dates back to formative years as he chaired the development of the digital audio measurement standard: AES17. One of the founders of Audio Precision, where he developed digital audio measurement technology, Dr Cabot also runs his own company, XFRM Inc, which designs equipment for the professional audio sector and offers consultancy for patentability and infringement issues.

‘I look forward to the opportunity to guide AES Standards development going forward, to build further on the solid foundation of AES standards that have served our industry well,’ said Dr Cabot ‘In a rapidly-changing technological landscape, new and evolving standards are crucial to progress.’

‘We have great expectations for Dr Cabot’s tenure as standards manager and are delighted that he has accepted the challenge,’ enthused Bruce Olson, AES Standards Committee chair. Mr Olson continued by praising the work put in by Mr Yonge: ‘During Mark's 16 years in the post he has expertly shepherded dozens of standards through the process from initial concept to published document. Under his guidance, the AES Standards organisation has grown to become the premier venue for coordinating technology in the audio field. We sincerely thank Mark for his dedication to the society’s standards activities.’

Mr Yonge is currently working alongside Dr Cabot, ensuring a smooth handover. ‘It will be a wrench to step aside from the work of audio standards development,’ stated Mr Yonge, ‘but I am delighted that Rich is taking up the task.’
