Blackmagic acquires Fairlight

WORLD: Video specialist, Blackmagic Design, has entered the audio side of the industry through the acquisition of fellow Australian company, Fairlight. The deal sees Blackmagic add Fairlight’s professional audio products for broadcast, film and television postproduction, as well as 3D audio mixing and finishing to its range of video products for film, postproduction and television broadcast.

Fairlight announced earlier this year that it was actively looking for a buyer for its pro audio technology as ‘the potential for Fairlight’s professional audio technologies is much larger than can be achieved under the current ownership’. At the time of that announcement, Fairlight stated it was looking to ‘talk to organisations that wanted to leverage its professional audio technologies to augment their offerings and enhance their competitive positions in this rapidly evolving market’. With its complementary products on the visual side of the industry, the acquisition by Blackmagic Design appears to have met this aim.

‘Fairlight creates the world’s most powerful digital audio software and hardware for video production,’ said Grant Petty, Blackmagic Design CEO. ‘The exciting part about this acquisition is that it will add incredibly high end professional audio technology to Blackmagic Design’s amazing video products. We look forward to working with the Fairlight team to build even more exciting new products for our customers!’
