Bringing light to Life

NEW ZEALAND: Auckland’s Life Church has recently made the switch to using LED fixtures to light up the stages and auditoriums across its three campuses: Life Central, Life North and the recently opened Life South. The church’s technical manager, Mark Johnson, opted for a Robe solution following a technical demonstration comparing several brands by the manufacturer’s New Zealand distributor, Lighting Supply Company, a local partner of the ULA Group.

The decision to migrate the ministry’s lighting to an LED system comes as part of its commitment to being carbon conscious, with the added benefit being that its is more cost effective to operate and maintain LED fixtures. The fact that many of Life Church’s events are recorded or live streamed was also taken into account as the new lighting fixtures would not only need to produce a dynamic visual effect for the congregants in attendance on camera, but also look good on camera.

In Life Church’s Central campus, located on Mount Eden Road, the 850-seat auditorium can be hired to host a range of activities, such as conferences and seminars, in addition to Ministry-run events and the weekly Sunday worship sessions. To cater for all of this, the auditorium has been equipped with a combination of Robin 600 LEDWash fixtures and DLX Spots. Meanwhile, the Life North campus in the suburb of Albany has been on the receiving end of eight 600 LEDWash units of its own.

A technical team of six assists Mr Johnson, alongside an array of volunteers from congregation. Of the voluntary staff, 18 aid with the lighting operation. Also involved in the purchase with Mr Johnson was Matt Cardno, a member of the technical crew who joined Life Church following a 20-year career in television lighting. Mr Cardno’s day-to-day responsibility is to look after the production kit across the campuses.

‘The Robes are amazing and really reliable – you turn them on and they just keep working,’ enthuses Mr Cardno, who continued to mention that he appreciated the flicker-free operation of the LEDs, which helps with the camera-work and is impressed with the colours. Of the DLX fixtures, he notes that the ‘quality and price point were ideal’.
