New Life Church Gahanna expands with WorxAudio

WORLD: Having started out of the music room at Gahanna West Middle School in 1985, the congregation and ministry at New Life Church Gahanna has grown significantly. To meet this expansion, the church opted to install a new sound system at its Columbus, Ohio-based sanctuary to provide ‘superior sound quality for its ambitious music programme’, and enlisted the services of Creative Sound and Lighting Solutions to design and deploy a new solution.
‘The sanctuary at New Life Church Gahanna is a big, open space that measures 30m by 30m, with a ceiling height of 6m,’ recalled Rob Robinson, the co-owner of Creative Sound and Lighting Solutions. ‘Music plays a very important role in their worship services, with the choir and orchestra occupying a good 25 minutes or so of every service. The services are contemporary in nature, so it was very important to provide a sound system with a high level of speech intelligibility, in addition to excellent music reproduction characteristics.’
Creative Sound and Lighting Solutions opted for equipment from WorxAudio and installed an XL5i-P line array above the centre of the stage. The XL5i-P is a five-cluster cabinet that combines five high-frequency drivers and 10 bass drivers to deliver a 160-degrees by 40-degrees dispersion pattern.
‘The XL5i-P is the only loudspeaker system that we can trust to replace not only a three-box centre cluster but two additional outside edge speakers placed 9m to the left and right,’ explained Mr Robinson. ‘The XL5i-P’s broad 160-degree throw is quite extraordinary and is far more effective in providing even coverage throughout the room than the previous multiple-enclosure system was. The system is very musical, and speech is clear. Equally important, the single-cluster design minimises line-of-sight-considerations and, as a result, does not detract from the aesthetics of the room.’
Furthermore, the support provided by the manufacturer was also a key part of the project. ‘The day before we arrived, we planned a Skype session with Jeff Page at WorxAudio,’ explained Mr Robinson 'Within 30 minutes, Jeff was on my laptop taking a look around, and he was able to provide a hang position within roughly an hour. We work very well together, and he is passionate about the same details that we are.'
Since its installation, the new system has been in constant use during church services. ‘Since the system was first fired up, we’ve received nothing but compliments,’ Mr Robinson added. 'Eric Rice, New Life Church Gahanna’s director of audio ministry, told me on the phone recently that it could not have worked out any better. In fact, down the road, the church will be looking to us to be provide A/V technology for its future expansion plans. When one project leads to another, that’s as good as it gets!’
