The Projection Studio creates video artwork for All Souls Church

WORLD: Projection artist Ross Ashton from London-based The Projection Studio was recently called upon to create a giant video artwork, ‘Spiritus’ on the front of Kent’s All Souls Church for the 2013 Cheriton Lights Festival.

Mr Ashton was commissioned to produce the piece by production company Strange Cargo and collaborated with sound artist Karen Monid, who produced the accompanying soundscape.

Mr Ashton and Ms Monid took the church’s four stained glass windows depicting the four Archangels: Gabriel, Michael, Uriel and Raphael, as a starting point for their concept. The overall idea was to produce atwo-centre piece that worked both inside and outside the church.

The outside soundtrack played alongside Mr Ashton’s wall painting of animated Archangels. Laid out against a kaleidoscopic feather based background, they were projected across the entire front of the church, covering an area 16m x 10m. The motion graphics were created by The Projection Studio’s Sang Gun Kim based on concepts and photographic work undertaken by Mr Ashton.

Creative Technology supplied a Panasonic PT-DZ21K projector, which was operated by Paul Moreland. Fitted with a 1.3 lens, it was located 25m away pointing out of an office window across the road from the church. The looped video content was run from a Macintosh laptop and all the warping and perspective correction was achieved using Panasonic’s proprietary software tools.

Meanwhile, sound was run from a 24-track ADAT machine supplied by Projection Studio, processed through a Soundcraft mixing desk. Outside, sound was relayed via two d&b E9 speakers. The team utilised the church’s in-house speaker system for the sound inside the worship space.

‘It was truly magical and I know it will be talked about for years to come,’ enthused Strange Cargo’s Brigitte Orasinski.

‘It’s great working on projects like this, especially as this was the first festival on this scale ever to be held in Cheriton,' said Mr Ashton. 'Congratulations to Strange Cargo for pulling it off. The reaction of the public was fantastic. Taking a little known local treasure and re-connecting it to the community is very satisfying.’
